Immigration Immersion

A Migrant Journey: Scripture's Call to Welcome the Stranger

SAN DIEGO/ TIJUANA
August 9-12, 2024

Love Mercy Do Justice is partnering with Journey Home to offer an immersive immigration discipleship experience that:

  • Compels us to biblically ground the conversation around immigration.
  • Allows us to go beyond what we hear and see in the news, to experience firsthand what is happening at the southern border.
  • Humanizes the immigration debate, moving us from political polarities to theological discernment concerning scripture's consistent commission to welcome the stranger.
  • Equips us to creatively function as everyday peacemakers within our local context, and empowers us to begin seeing conflict as an opportunity for transformation.

“The immigration immersion experience is an exceptional discipleship experience geared to help understand the plight of our immigrant brothers and sisters. We heard heartbreaking stories from moms who were separated from their young children for years. We listened to a veteran who fought in our military and was later deported. We visited a detention center that was nothing more than a private prison for people whose “crime” was to flee the violence and chaos of their home country. We worshiped at the border with brothers and sisters in a common worship service united by the Holy Spirit of God but divided by metal slats made by human hands. The heart of God beats strongly in our brothers and sisters who have experienced loss, violence, and the ripping apart of families.”

“The crisis at the US/Mexico border threatened to paralyze me with hopelessness and grief. By bringing me face to face with people who are confronting the situation, God used this immersive discipleship experience to give me a fresh shot of vision and hope. The insights garnered here have broad applications for discipleship, including how to care for communities in need and how to engage passionate differences of opinion. Time spent with migrants, deportees, border patrol agents, ICE agents, church leaders, and community organizers gave me opportunities to see Jesus at work. If you are wondering how to faithfully engage this human crisis with compassion or simply looking for tools to engage a divided world with restorative love, I recommend this experience for you and your team.”

“This was such a life-affirming opportunity! We learned from leaders on the margins who taught us how to love well and faithfully advocate for our neighbors existing in the shadows. We were challenged to immerse ourselves in people’s life journeys—from recently deported US military veterans to DACA recipients who have seen their families torn apart, to Border Patrol agents, and ICE officers. This experience serves to build up leaders in biblical peacemaking, education in immigration and mass incarceration policies, and strategies to support holistic restoration.”
